21 clean sheets...

21 clean sheets...

...I think we need a bigger airing cupboard!

The clean sheet against West Ham on Tuesday was our 21st of the season so far, which is up 9 on what we managed in the whole of last season.

The reason for this mean defence according to what Glen Johnson has told the Pompey Site is the fact that the usual back five of David James, Hermann Hreidarsson, Sol Campbell, Sylvain Distin and of course Johnson work so well as a unit, but even more importantly is the fact that we defend as a team, with this starting from the front: 'we all work very well together but it's not just the back five.

'Defending starts from the top and you could see David Nugent closing down the West Ham full-backs which obviously helps us because it keeps the ball up the other end of the pitch.

'So it's an all round team performance but our back five is definitely up there with the best.

'When we take the lead we know how to close the game down and we keep defending well.

'It's simple really - if we take the lead and keep a clean sheet then we win the game'.

21 clean sheets must mean we have a ratio of around 1 in 2 this season as we cannot have played many games more than the early 40s so far this season? This is a phenomenal record that very few clubs at any level in England would be able to match surely...

This is just another sign of just how far we have come over the years, as who would have thought we could keep that number of clean sheets whilst playing at the highest level eh! It is simple really, if you do not concede you do not lose, if you score a goal you win and that is what we have done so often this season.

And for the most part, we've done it in style. This really is the best it's ever been

Rug, is it possible to see a clean sheet league anywhere? This would make interesting reading especially when you think Man Utd seem to ship a lot of goals

I have never come across one but Matto has taken over as site Statto - a tag I am more than pleased to hand over - maybe he can come up with something.

I understand Andrex will replace OKI as our main sponsors. Not sure about Dave about talking over but happy to add from time to time!

Serious Matt know. A fantastic achievement. All winning teams have a solid defence & as already mentioned you can't underestimate the contribution of Tony Adams.

Not looked at Carpet's link but gather Pompey and Liverpool have 15 clean sheets each. Also it is now 23 games this season that Pomepy have taken the lead and all 23 have been won!! Some record that.

your right dave - joint 3rd in the clean sheet league - but the 23/23 has to be the most impressive stat. just a shame we drew with derby on the opening day, as they were the only 2 points we have dropped from winning positions!

Northampton (h) - Securing home advantage?

Some could view this as a 'dead rubber!' It isn't as Champions Northampton will want to end on a high and Pompey will want 'an advantage' against Plymouth in the play-offs. Right?

Pompey MotM at Hartlepool

Pompey went into the penultimate game with a slim chance of a top 3 finish. A 2-0 win at Hartlepool saw the Blues do what we needed but wins for others ended those chances.

An emergency loan arrival of a goalie has been ruled out by the Football League but this doesn't mean a free agent cannot be signed by Pompey should a suitable option be found?
