Mensah longing to play in England

Apparent Pompey target John Mensah has spelt out his desire to play in England - and possibly with Pompey…

The Ghanaian international has been heavily 'linked' with Pompey for a good number of days now, and with Sol Campbell 'rumoured' to be leaving Pompey in the summer he could be viewed as an ideal replacement for our captain should he leave, and Mensah has told The Sun today a move to England, to rejoin his former Rennes teammate John Utaka at Pompey is something that he would like: 'I would be happy to join him. I think it is a good place for an African player.

'In the past Reading spoke about me and I know they are still interested. But with Portsmouth joining the picture it has made it even more interesting'.

He also claims interest from other premier league clubs besides Reading and Pompey, with Pompey said to be 'not the only top English club keen on him' - is it not great to see players referring to us as 'a top English club!'

Mensah is generally regarded as one of the best African defenders around and is said to have been recommended to Harry Redknapp sometime last year by Utaka. With him also being an international teammate of Sulley Muntari there would be no shortage of ties making him want to come here.

Who knows what the summer will hold, we will be linked with name after name in the coming months, but would I be unhappy to see Mensah sign? From what I do know of him and what I have seen then I would have to say I would not be against this at all to be honest.

well, from everything that i have heard, he sounds like he could be a good adition to our squad/team.... but i still doubt campbell will leave, so in that sence, i reckon it will be an adition, not a replacement...

I know Harry watched him play for Ghana against Mexico midweek in London. It could happen. Sol, I think will leave.

i agree Sol will leave. as for mensah, another african??? well it suits our profile, we look so scary these days! depends on the price ... £5mil, worth it?

Has anyone seen the picture of him in the Sun today? He looks more like a boxer than a footballer! I just can't see Sol leaving, not yet anyway. I think getting someone else in though will happen. Unfortunately it probably means that Linvoy won't get to play again though even if he does become fit. :(

I reckon mensah will join be a good addition but what about LINVOY PRIMUS he is a cb he always puts a 100% in for us.Sol won't leave he has only just signed a new contract.

i think sol will leave tbh, he has always said that he would like a crack at playing abroad so he wont get another chance...
i wouldnt write off linvoy, i thought his chances were slim of getting a new deal, but if he can prove his fitness then i have this sneaky feeling that he might just get it?

linvoy will be inspired, like another signing!

Sol will leave. I said last year that this would be his last season with us. I am just as sure Mensah won't be his replacement. Look for a good experienced defender from one of the relegated teams or a good defender in his mid 20's from the Championship or an experienced European player. Crainie is heir elect but may not have the maturity just yet so I think HR will look for another experienced older player to fill the gap for a year or 2 or a younger player and then rotate him and Cranie and the more experienced defenders we already have, for a season.

Sneaky I saw the picture in the Sun online, you're right he he one hell of a meaty bloke isn't he.. 100% muscle.. I think Sol will probably go if he signs off with a FA Cup Medal and I also (unfortuantely) think we have seen the last of Linvoy... Sentiment it great but sometimes we need to just move on... Give him a testamonial though and watch Pompey fans pack Fratton

He looks a big lump, and if he can do as good a job as the Sol man we will be lucky. Lets not prat about with him, if Harry thinks he is the business go out and get him.

I agree he would be a good signing but we need to be thinking about the African Cup of Nations. We are sitting sixth because of that reason. We lost some silly games cos our squad was so thin. If we were full strength for them games I think we would be now keeping up a good fight for fourth and who knows!
