Redknapp - 5th place is out of reach

Redknapp - 5th place is out of reach

Following our weekend defeat Harry Redknapp has told The News that he feels 5th is now a bridge too far: 'I think fifth is very difficult now. You have to fancy Everton.

'It's not impossible and of course we'll keep going.

'But our main priority now has to be the FA Cup.

'Winning that would be a terrific achievement. Imagine what that would mean to our supporters'.

You can understand what Redknapp is saying, as in all honesty it is looking as though 5th is going to be too much to ask as Everton are 7pts ahead of us and would have to lose at least 3 games I would say, or at least drop points in several and we would have to win all the games we have left - which is possible I guess, but is a big askā€¦

Clearly the FA cup is the priority, but we cannot just give up on the league and in all honesty I do not think that we will. We all know what Redknapp is like for playing things down, so by again doing this with a possible 5th place finish this is being done again.

But come on fellas lets be honest what would you rather? Finish 5th and not win the FA cup, or finish 6th or 7th - which are certainly more than possible and would still be a fantastic finish - dare I say it even 8th or as low as 9th and lift the cup? I know what I would rather do!

Ideally we can win the cup and still finish 5th, but I will just take winning the cup now this season, that would suit me down to the ground - and I will be devastated if we cannot go on and achieve this now.

Everton still have to play Liverpool and Arsenal (A) and Chelsea (H) so all is not lost yet.

That is very true Eastneydave - Let's say Everton got draws against all three, something I think they are capable of, and we win our three corosponding games that would only put us 1 point behind and everything is still to play for.

Personally though I would be more than happy with 6th this season as I still think we have weak spots in the squad. In any normal year that would have gotten us into Europe, and it's only coz Spuds won the MM cup, and there are a bunch of unknowns (lol) left in the FA Cup that Europe is given only up to 5th.
I think we have had a fantasic season, far better than I could ever have hoped for - and although now every Pompey supporter would be devestated if we didn't win the FA Cup, how many put a bet on at the beginning of the season when we were 50/1? We have far exceeded ourselves, and I am happy that we can on our day beat anyone in this league (except Chelsea) and for the present time are not looking at home many points we can get to stay in the Premiership.

6th would be a fantastic finish although still difficult to hold on to. Can't help thinking if arry had made the substution 5 minutes earlier on Saturday then we could have got a point or even all 3.

i wish i had put my traditional tenner bet on us to win the fa cup... i always do it and this season have felt it even more than ever we would, i would have virtually paid for my season ticket with my winnings if i had - and of course we do go onto do... 'if' we do then maybe the fact that i didnt put the money on it could make the difference eh!

bluedr, i would back that up but go a step further, as i reckon if 'arry had made the change with 20 minutes to play we would have won tbh, i dont think baros, or maybe even nugent would have been as tentative with the header as kanu was, but there you go...

Do you think it was Harry being typically stuborn on Sat, and that's why he didn't make the change? It worked against Manure, so I can't understand why he didn't make any changes until so late on? Would have been nice to see Baros and Nugent on for Kanu and Utaka. A bit of 4-4-2 with two fairly fast strikers could have changed the game in our favour.

You have to say lifting the FA cup has to be a priority - we can't throw everything at chasing 5th or 6th and miss out on that. I can go into a daze just thinking about Sol picking up that cup with its blue ribbons . . . . At the same time we should keep trying to pick up points in the league and see if we can't finish 6th or maybe 5th.
