Defoe gets Campbell backing

Defoe gets Campbell backing

Jermain Defoe has been grabbling the plaudits since he arrived, and rightfully so. His 2 goals against Birmingham during the week took him onto 5 in 5 games since his arrival from Spurs.

Having only been given a late call-up into Fabio Capello's 1st England squad he is a near certainty to be in his next, and Sol Campbell has given his club teammate his full backing when speaking to the Daily Star, and has urged him to take this chance should it come along: 'Jermain has got a good chance to stake a claim.

'He's come down here, he's playing and he's scoring. Now he has to grab his opportunity.

'He doesn't necessarily have to be selfish, but he has to stake a claim for England because he has the chance now.

'He just has to believe he can really make a difference.

'He is very sharp. He makes good runs, scores with both feet and he's quick. Now he has to believe'.

I have been impressed with Defoe since he arrived, he is often accused of 'being lazy', which to be honest if he was scoring 20 goals a season you could deal with really, but I have not seen a lazy player at all since he signed…

His attitude appears to be spot on too, he gave up a possible league cup winners medal to come here, and 'might' also miss out on an FA cup winners medal, but this has not stopped him from fully supporting the cup cause even if he cannot be a part of it, as it was said by Harry Redknapp that Defoe was the first person to text him after we beat United voicing his delight at the win.

I maintain my belief that as far as a goalscoring striker goes there is not a better striker than Defoe playing in the top flight, again as I keep saying this is not to say I think that as an all-round player he is the best striker, just the best in terms of a goalscorer.

I was going to write a thread on whether his 4 goals since the Chelsea game could have been scored by any one - tap ins, penalties... but as big ears pointed out, if it was that easy then everyone would be doing it...

He is a cless act, and he is ours, we have longed for a 20 goal striker since the Yak left, he is the man, i dont care if he scores from 200 yards or on the line as long as he carries on scoring. As for penalties, if we had converted the ones Benjy and Kanu missed we would be in a even healthier position.
14/03/2008 12:21:00
Look, be very f u cking happy you have him. By no means is he the best striker in the top flight - not event top 5 (be deluded if you want) but the fact is he was trying to do a Sol Cambell on us and you got him at a price that I rate to be about half his worth. He is lightening fast, he has a rocket launcher attached to both feet - and can cross with serious accuracy. We are all gutted that Jermain has gone on to pastures new but fully understand his position. I wish him all the best at pompey no matter how sh itter club or ground you have. He is sorely missed in North London. Best striker my a s s. Did you Berbas goal against the PSV lot? What about Torres? Better than Rooney is he? arf arf arf. he is good. be happy with that. The best he has yet to prove - but he is young and coming into what should be his best and most complete years as a footballer. Come on you spurs. We'll still finish above you lot
14/03/2008 12:35:00
Class act Berbatov, he will be even better at United next year. I think Jermaine was probably hacked off because Bent, Keane and Berbatov were being selected above him. I grant you Torres, Berbatov and Drogba even Anelka are as good or better, but they will take the money when the chance comes and go somewhere else, Defoe wanted to play football and play for England, Good luck to Spurs, i wish we had spent 16 million on Bent, and had Englands number 5 goalkeeper, bullers get a life mate, see you at Wembley.
14/03/2008 12:56:00
Bullers, Sol has gone, get over it, we were the same when we lost O'Neill, Benjani, Taylor and the Yak, move on and enjoy your cup victory you deserve it
14/03/2008 13:00:00
you won't see us at wembley mate. Thats because we already have the winners medals. You'll be getting runners up at best. Berba is not a money pony. If Ramos was managing you would want out or would you stay another year? Indeed. Alreday brought in a trophy. Proved he can crack the top flight in span (Seville had never played CL until JR brought them togtehr and to that level.) You mentioned wishing that you bougt bent for 16mil? Would that not begin with having 16mil to spend? Pikeys.
14/03/2008 13:12:00
Where Span mate, is that at the Bridge? The Fizzy Pop cup is a start for a huge club like Spurs,i never said we had 16 million to spend, but if we had then Darren would have been our first choice obviously. Ramos is a great manager, and will bring you sucess, but Martin Jol was pretty good at the start i seem to remember, peasant!!

Bullers.. Bet you wished you had Defoe on Wednesday night !... Missed any penalties lately .... Enjoy the rest of your season .. it must be great looking at the league and calculating you can at least reach ..what 9th !!... oh and I thought Spurs were the club that were gonna break into the top 4 this season .. didn't realise you played at Goodison.. Muppet ..
14/03/2008 13:29:00
he would have missed - just as he did at west ham. Oh no I forgot - he wouldn't have even made the squad. Strength in depth I am afraid - something you poor southern Squaddies could never afford. And as far as the league position - I would stake my life that we'll finish above your lot. what do we care about 9th or 12th or 6th now anyway - CL went outt the sindown when kemsley got caught in seville. Undermined Jol and the dressing room. MUGS

Take care Bullers have a great life, or at least find one, when you come out of the shadow of the Gooners or Chelski or United or Liverpool i hope you find happiness, you may well finish above us, but for all your gobbing off you wont be in the top 6 like you have been telling us for the last few years. Squad wise we are quite content, no real superstars, but all we ask is that they do a job for us, and not sell themselves to United, or sulk. Well done on winning the reserve team trophy, now p*** off and bore people on your own website, remember you are top 6 material, and see you at Wembley.
