'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Someone was shining down on us!

The reality of what we did yesterday, and what it means has really hit home today, to be honest I am feeling quite emotional.

I can barely talk as I sang myself hoarse - and this from a fella who does not always sing at games, it usually depends who I am with, and where it is really. Self-conscious springs to mind, but sometimes you have to throw caution to the wind!

This is what we did yesterday - look at it, think about it fully and it will sink in, if it has not already…

  • we beat United
  • we beat United at Old Trafford
  • we are into the semi finals of the FA cup
  • we are playing at Wembley - it is just a shame in a way that the 1st time most of us here will be going to see Pompey at Wembley will be for a semi final, as opposed to a final if you know what I mean?
  • we are 90 minutes away from the FA cup final, and all the other trimmings which would come with it!

The reality has sunk in, but the buzz is well and truly there, I am wired today but as I say emotional too.

It was something special being at Old Trafford yesterday, another of those games and occasions that you want to be able to say 'I was there', and one you will talk about for the rest of your life, the stories will be passed on to others also, and it also makes you proud as hell - even more so - to be a Pompey fan with fans like we have, it shows how far we have come too.

I cannot say enough how much I keep saying I feel this is our year, the luck is with us, but we are riding our luck and in all fairness I honestly think we deserved this luck yesterday as we were fantastic from the lowest point at Portsmouth Football Club right the way through to the highest - the fans!

You sometimes get this feeling it is your day, Lassana Diarra showing Cristiano Ronaldo he 'was his daddy' set the tone early on and we went on from that, but one really profound moment in the 2nd half was when I knew in my heart that day, and quite possibly the FA cup destiny was ours…

I am not a religious person at all, and this has not seen a new faith found, but it had been dark, raining, sleeting - or hailing I am not sure, but suddenly in the 2nd half the Sun shone bright and was beaming down on the Old Trafford pitch, so I turned to one of the fellas I was with and said 'this is the sign, we will win today and our name is on the cup', or words to that effect.

There were people shining down on us yesterday fellas religious or not you cannot think any differently, someone, or a collective of people wanted us to win, and they made it so.

When I got home I saw a comment from cornypomp - named that as he lives in Cornwall I think? - who sadly lost his father recently. He dedicated this game to him, and it was his father and other peoples' fathers, mothers, brothers, sisters, friends and loved ones, and of course people with Pompey connections that were shining down on us, someone wanted us to win and win we did.

Clearly whoever we play will not be easy, but on that same day seeing Chelsea crash out as well to Barnsley - who I congratulate wholeheartedly by the way - well and truly shows someone, or a collective were shining down on us…

Dont knock it mate, any trip to Wembley will be welcome, remember 1992, what we would have given to go, and then the following season both semi's were at Wembley weren't they? I cant wait to see Harry lead the boys out, it will be a dream come true. Jimmy Dickinson will be so proud of what we have achieved, and lets not forget Milan who helped to change things around.

Pompey at Wembley is fantastic, but I do believe playing the semi- finals there, devalues the final itself.

Wemberly Wemberly were the famous portsmouth city and were going to Wemberley! Have to say it's not just Fergie who is bad in defeat...there was lots of banter in our hotel the night before the game...your only here to make up the numbers etc, After the game there were many angry mancs saying...how lucky were you...penalty....Ronaldo targeted....Only 3 Irish fellas I got talking to said well done.

Died a thoushand death, screamed myself horse & havn't stopped smiling. Having waited all my life, well the last 33 years since I first saw Pompey play, I vowed I would only go to Wembley, when we got there. I want to go twice now. Bring it on.

im happy to see pompey at wembley, for many, many years i didnt think i would ever see this - but now i will so im made up by this... i do agree that i think the semi finals should be elsewhere, but dont think it devalues the cup... we'll be going twice in a month anyway - so we'll see the final and then the ultimate, what we have always wanted pompey at wembley for the fa cup final!

Feet on the ground time eh whizz! What you say is very true, now the result has sunk in 'arry needs to make sure the squad is focussed and dont go into any game thinking they just have to turn up.

I watched the Barnsley match. I hope we draw them. I think they will be lost on a big, smooth pitch like Wembley and can be opened up by our bigger and faster players. The 2nd half will find them out for fitness whoever they play.

for the first season in quite a lot of years, the big open space of wembly will be to our advantage rather than our undoing. very few sides pss the ball better than us in the premiership, probably none in the championship. lets hope we can go there and win...twice.

No, Norwich were also a Div 1 side. Prem hadn't started. We were with Sunderland in Div 2, I'm quite sure.

This is such a massive opportunity to not only get into Europe but to add some silverware and silverware so strong that we can lure seriously good players to Portsmouth FC. I was worried that although we were challenging this season, Everton were going to pull away and create a mini mini-league that challenge the top four. Winning the FA Cup will give us enough to stay with them. This is such a huge opportunity, anything but our name on that trophy now will be an enormous failure.

Having watched every FA Cup tie this weekend and our struggles to beat Plymouth and Preston - I'm not as confident as I should be.

no, barnsley played like demi-gods, everything they did, they did to perfection. from there perfect structure, to spot on tacklng, right down to good finishing from a player that hasnt scored since september. cardiff simply outplayed boro in everything they did, and gave the feel of a low level premiership side that was mooving the ball around well, and west brom... i expec to play them next season...they are good, very good (well, for the championship anyway)...oh, and i also expect to play them the season after. (and im not suggesting pompey get relegated either)

carpet you have been in a very 'cup half empty mood' recently... without doubt this isnt going to be easy, and if anyone thinks it will be they are wrong, but come on fellas what a chance we have - we shouldnt fear anyone, the championship is a physical league but we have alot of big, physical players so they should be able to cope with this, granted we struggled against ipswich, plymouth and preston but the main thing is - we won them all, if you cannot take a massive confidence boost from beating united at old trafford nothing will boost your confidence, that win will be in vein unless we go on to win the cup now, which 'if our name truly is on the cup' we will...

You can't afford to be too complacent but with the key players fit you have the team to win it. It would be a great boost for the club and some reward for playing decent football, having a likeable manager and investing in some gooner influences! Up Pompey!

If Man U say they werent complacent they are liars!! When the Pompey ticket office asked them how many tickets they wanted in case there was a replay Man Utds response was "i dont think we'll need them" How right they were!! We have to be at our best..and then theres nothing to stop us!
