Now I knew that the big fours dominance of the cup went way back, but I little snippet from Saturdays Currant Bun by Greavsie caught my eye.
Greavsie bemoans the fact that the cup is mere trinket passed around by the Premiership big boys. At his time of writing 2 were still active in this years cup, Manu have now been dispatched by our own boys, Barnsley have done the business against Chelsea, magic still alive? Paul Daniels couldn't have done it himself.
History shows that since Wimbledon 20 years ago, only 6 other winners have got their filthy rich hands on the cup,the usual 4 and Everton and Spurs. Before the Premiership was founded there was 14 different winners in 19 years, well the monopoly has been broken.
Out of the 6 teams still in the draw, West Brom are the most recent winners (1968), then Pompey as recent as 1939, Cardiff 1927, and Barnsley back in 1912. 'Boro and Bristol are still waiting, although Boro did lose a final with Juninho and all in 1997, in fact with a League cup win in 2004 you could say they have the best pedigree of the teams left.
The Pirates have already reached as far as they ever have, a quarter-final spot is real achievement, but the way this cup has gone, who would bet against another leap forward?
Greavsie goes on to say 'For the cup's sake and future, I really hope one of them takes the cup home', wish granted Greavsie.
