Cup Fever Pitch!

Now I knew that the big fours dominance of the cup went way back, but I little snippet from Saturdays Currant Bun by Greavsie caught my eye.
Greavsie bemoans the fact that the cup is mere trinket passed around by the Premiership big boys. At his time of writing 2 were still active in this years cup, Manu have now been dispatched by our own boys, Barnsley have done the business against Chelsea, magic still alive? Paul Daniels couldn't have done it himself.

History shows that since Wimbledon 20 years ago, only 6 other winners have got their filthy rich hands on the cup,the usual 4 and Everton and Spurs. Before the Premiership was founded there was 14 different winners in 19 years, well the monopoly has been broken.

Out of the 6 teams still in the draw, West Brom are the most recent winners (1968), then Pompey as recent as 1939, Cardiff 1927, and Barnsley back in 1912. 'Boro and Bristol are still waiting, although Boro did lose a final with Juninho and all in 1997, in fact with a League cup win in 2004 you could say they have the best pedigree of the teams left.
The Pirates have already reached as far as they ever have, a quarter-final spot is real achievement, but the way this cup has gone, who would bet against another leap forward?
Greavsie goes on to say 'For the cup's sake and future, I really hope one of them takes the cup home', wish granted Greavsie.

I don't care who wins now, as long as they have a "P" in their name!

Do you think Everton, Villa, Blackburn and City will be rooting for Pompey now?

who would have thought that the league would 'only' offer 1 european place this season - as looks likely... the european push is going to look even harder now for everyone isnt it - i'll happily take 9th if 'when' we win the cup :-) it is good for the game that it will be a different winner, its also good for the cup as it brings back that magic, some say it has lost.

probably not.I get tickets EVERY year for the cup final, through my local amateur club, and obviously I wish my team were going to be at Wembley, but I'm glad none of the other "top four" will be there either. Its going to be the best day out for years this time, and I'm truly rooting for you lot(nothing to do with the 5 I had on you to win it at 25/1 in December!)

Its good that a team for outside of the big 4 will get the trip to Wembley twice. Merlin i dont blame you for rooting for them, i hope Arsenal win the European Cup!! Only joking, Chelsea will win something this year i am sure.

What makes you think that carpet? Won't we have all the support from ManU fans, Southampton fans lol. Add to that the Cheries fans who will definately and genuinely support us. I have spoken to both of them and they assure me we get there support. Enough of the sarcasim. Do you think the premier league clubs will take the Cup seriously next year now they all (apart from Pompey) have egg on their faces. We may not get this far again for a long time so lets enjoy it and say up you to those who don't support us.

I had this peculiar dream this weekend. I dreamt I went to Man Utd and saw Pompey beat them. At some point Ferdinand was playing in goal! And then I dreamt Pompey were the only Premier League side left in the FA Cup! It felt so real I fear the men in white coats will come and take me away!

We have enough fans not to worry about who wants us to win, lets just show those prawn sandwich eating, corporate hospitality loving fans what real support is really all about.
