Franck Songo'o has joined Wednesday on a month long loan deal, and will be hoping that his spell in the championship proves better at Hillsborough than it did Selhurst Park with Palace earlier in the season - although the early signs from what I saw were very promising, things just did not work out in the end.
Songo'o came here from Barcelona under Alain Perrin, and although he has not really been given a go by Harry Redknapp the fact that he has kept him, despite my thoughts that he might not be 'one of 'arry's boys' is giving a glimmer of hope to me that he could have something about him that makes him want to keep him - if not he would have been released, or sold by now wouldn't he?
You cannot really judge too much from pre season or reserve football but whenever I have seen him in pre season he has looked good, he can play on either flank, has skill and pace, maybe his delivery lets him down, but he knows how to score! He appears to have been at the heart of most things in the reserves recently too.
Apart from costing around £7m less, and being some 4 or 5 years younger I cannot see that there would have been much difference between him and John Utaka at present to be honest, and do not feel that Songo'o would have made any less of an impression than he has on the whole - had he been given the run the Nigerian has…
I guess all we can do is just see how this loan goes, it will be good for him to get some 1st team football, and at the level he is at it 'should' also toughen him up, which could be one of the things that he is lacking?
This summer will probably make or break him, if we keep him again for next season then surely this means he has a long term future and will feature, unless he is on such good money - which I would doubt, but you never know with Pompey - we cannot afford to pay it up and need to wait for his deal to end…
