The 'new Benjani' found?

Reports are growing on t'internet that we have found 'the new' Benjani, in the shape off 22-year-old Benin international Razak Omotoyossi.

How good he is I do not know, but it is 'said' that he posses the qualities that Benjani does, and maybe more - plus he is younger…

The whole rights and wrongs of Benjani being sold will not be covered again by myself here, as they have been flogged to death but it is thought that a 'Benjani' type is exactly what Jermain Defoe needs, and is what we are now looking for. As I have said before I feel the pair would have been dynamite but it did not happen - and simple truth is he is gone and it cannot be changed whatever we say…

Maybe this fella - who plays for Swedish club Helsingborg, and was the top scorer in the group stages of the uefa cup - is the answer? I guess we will find out in the summer?

I will give Omotoyossi - who turned down a move to Holland because he was not offered enough - this, he is honest if nothing else as this is what he is quoted as telling the Swedish press: 'footballers are like prostitutes - we want to be where the money is.

'Therefore, I would never reject the chance to play for anyone. It's a matter of money.

'The offer from Groningen was enough for the club, but they didn't want to pay me what I wanted'.

Interesting thoughts!

Whatever though there will never be another Benjani, he really is an almost unique footballer, you do not find many footballers of his type, but if this fella does have qualities similar to him then he would certainly be worth a punt would he not - we would just have to make sure we 'offer him enough'…

Like you say, Rug, the matter of selling Benji has been done to death, and I don't want to go over it again either, but I can't help thinking, why a new Benjani when we shouldn't have got rid of the old one! But thats done now. Perhaps if we sign Omotyossi it will bring the balance back into the team and provide a good partner for Defoe.
tracyc
that was the easiest solution wasnt it - but what can you do...
pompeyrug
clearly the balance was better before defoe arrived, but even then in all fairness things were still not right, particularly in the midfield area - we are just a few tewaks away from getting it right, but to do this some 'favourites' will need to make way, then show they are willing to fight to get back in...
pompeyrug
Footballers are like prostitutes indeed. You give them anything other than money and they still gallop off to different club.
Lysimachus
With the government threatening not to issue work permits to Zimbabwe sportsman, we may not get Benji to play the games to get our full sale price.
storagematt
We need a decent right sided midfield player who has pace and can work with Glen Johnson, we might have to go abroad to get him, but he will be out there and Harry will find him. If this lad is as good as Benjy then he would be a good addition to the squad.
Owenspompey
benji played with pride for the club. this guy plays for money. no comparison...
pompeycarpet
Only accept the real thing!! Must dig into Omotoyossi and find out more.
eastneydave
that said, we do need a player that fils that kind of role...maybe nugent???
pompeycarpet
nugent and defoe played well together for england (against andorra)
pompeycarpet
its a nice thought carpet but i think nugents card has been marked - it would be nice to think not, but it doesnt seem too likely that he has much of a future does it...
pompeyrug
lol I like that quote. But you've got to be concerned that if he gets interest from a bigger club, he'll be out of there in no time for the right amount.
The_Legend_Of_Zola
we were definitely missing a lot of things at goodison- we were poor- but a big msn for Defoe to play off was onw
plymouth graham
Can't we just save ourselves the trouble and let ManCity buy him? That way we won't end up coming out a couple million down. Sorry, that's more than enough sour grapes, I know. More seriously, I can't help thinking that our priorities should be in midfield and defense at the moment. In the medium term, we do need a player who can parter with Defoe and I don't think anyone thinks that Kanu or Baros are anything more than extras. Assuming that both of those are happy to stay and fight for places, I'm guessing that means Utaka and Nugent to be sold off in the summer?
