'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Surely we won't loan out Nugent?

I tried to fight this, as it was not something I wanted to cover as I am fed up with 'rumour' and 'speculation' surrounding Dave Nugent but the idea that he could leave us on loan just will not go away will it...

According to the Ipswich Evening Star it is being 'said' that Ipswich boss Jim Magilton has made a loan approach for Nugent for the rest of the season, and 'apparently' we are not 'entirely opposed to the idea': 'Nugent is a possibility. We have asked about taking him on loan and Portsmouth have not ruled it out.

'We are well aware if he did come he is not at 100% but he is making massive strides to get fit so we will wait and see what happens.

'He loves Portman Road and he loves scoring goals here so it would be good to have him in a Blues shirt'.

I have made my thoughts on Nugent more than clear, so I am not going to go over these again.

However in light of Harry Redknapp only a day or so ago claiming he was still 'light' when it came to strikers how could he then justify letting him going out on loan?

The only possible benefits that I could see to this could be him rediscovering his goalscoring form, but even then how would this benefit him as this would be at a level that he was trying to get away from it will not be anything new to him, so will not prove anything new will it.

So the only reason I can see the sense in loaning him out is if it has been decided once and for all that he is not wanted here, so by loaning him out if he can start scoring again at least it will get him in the public eye and could see his value held, at the very least not drop too much? There is also the chance that if he does well for Ipswich they could be interested in signing him if they get promoted?

To be honest I do not want him to go - surprise, surprise - and think that if we do then we are virtually kissing our FA cup chances goodbye as injuries to Kanu, Milan Baros or John Utaka - even though he is not being viewed as a striker - would leave us with no one... unless we had a 24 hour recall clause inserted? And I am finding it hard to belief that will can see through the rest of the cup campaign with just 2 strikers...

Redknapp says he wants to keep him, but then he does not mention him when he talks about the strikers we have, if we genuinely are contemplating letting him go on loan then to me this would speak volumes about where his future does lie...

Well said Rug, Perhaps we need his wages paid!!!. If he is loaned out, lets enjoy "HR" talk his way out of that one.

this would be totally against alot of things, especially our fa cup chances. why sell benji for 3.5m, buy nugent for 6m, and not play him?

I hope he stays but think HR doesn't like the guy. Will have to wait and see how this one pans out.

Actions speak louder than words and the bottom line, for whatever reason iss that Harry really given Nuge a chance .. If he is viewed as a long term fixture I'd say he should say and fight for his place... If he isn't and Harry is not gonna play him better that we get his wages paid and put him in the shop window.... Not that I wanna see him go ... but I think reality is begining to bite for young Mr Nuge...

I don't think it makes any sense to loan him out at this stage with the cup campaign as it is and Defoe cup tied - and if that wasn't the case, the only reason I could see to loan him out would be for him to get Premier League experience, which he won't get at Ipswich. But there's been no swift denial from Arry about this, so it might happen unfortunately.

If HR doesn't like the guy, why did he sign him?

I'd loan him out, his confidence is low, he is not fit, he is 4th choice. Only thing I would insist on is a 24hr recall period. Playing week in, week out is better for him than being an unused sub each week

Its not about liking or not liking its about ability. It was gamble, this one hasn't worked. Spurs paid 16m on Darren Bent, so far that hasn't worked. I agree with paultsmouth comments too. Sorry 007 you seem to have a problem with the manager?

I think we might. And don't call me Shirley. I think this might be HR thinking he has a last chance before the summer to see whether Nugent is worth keeping or whether he's going to be sold off in the summer. Either that or because he needs to score a few goals or he won't raise enough money to be worth selling. For whatever reason, he doesn't seem to figure in HR's plans as anything more than a last option. I agree with you, Rug, I don't think it's wise and there is every chance we'll come to regret it. But I won't be surprised.

I think Nugent could shine given the chance. I have predicted he will score against Sunderland and against Man U so I have my c..k on the block. As far as I can recall HR never actually said he wanted Nugent, he obviously isn't a great fan of his and does whatever he can to make him appear useless. Nugent almost overnight appeared at Pompey after some of the quickest and smoothest negotiations that Storrie has ever been involved in. I have made mention before of Sasha wanting to appear politically correct for varying reasons. A lot has been made of HR buying African players and ignoring English players. I suspect, no proof just suspect, that Sasha may have bought Nugent not HR. HR could now be trying to "get back" at Sasha by making things appear that Nugent isn't up to it and Sasha should not have bought him so don't do it again. Politics comes into football as well. We will see but my guess is that Nugent will stay and be given more of a chance (he who pays the wages has the biggest say) and Baros will be the one moved to the bench except for cup ties.

maybe so, but we know what 'arry is like if sacha started getting involved like that he would have 'probably walked' wouldnt he... i do agree tho for whatever reason 'arry doesnt appear to rate nuge at all, and as i have said several times about a few players once you are not 'one of 'arry's boys' it is very hard, almost impossible to become one... nuge clearly wants to be here as someone pointed out recently, for the chelski game he had to be driven to the ground as he couldnt drive after his operation but he was still the 1st player to arrive, he is putting in extra training and keeps saying he wants to be here - he needs a chance, and i mean an extended run not just a game or two or 5 or 10 minutes here and there, a proper run... loaning him out would be stupid in my opinion, but if selling him in the summer is already decided then putting him in the 'shop window' would be the way to go... alternatively just getting some confidence back could be something, but as mentioned and like paul pointed out to any loan 'must' involve a 24 hours recall clause incase we are left up a certain creek without a paddle...

It might be that its not going to work out for the lad at Pompey - in which case it might be better for all if he does move on, and starts to make a success somewhere else. But I haven't given up on him making a success at Pompey yet, I'd just like to see him get a proper chance - then take it, and force his way into selection.

One thing is for sure, we do not know the Nugent story. These columns have suggested that "HR" has not been fully in control of a number of sale transfers. If this is the case frattonaussie could well be right in suggesting the same for purchases.

HR has seen him close up all season, in training & on the pitch. HR knows the standard we want & Nugent doesn't fit the bill. All this 'rose tininted' view of Nugent ain't helping anybody.

sorry matt i agree with most of what you say most of the time but the nuge issue is just something i cant agree with - it looks like he is going, so the chances are he probably wont come back again, 'if' he moves on i am telling you we will live to regret this... granted thats just my personal opinion...

i think he should go out on loan to get some confidence and experience, so he can start scoring goals, and even if he does decide to stay at ipswich we wont be losing much

I withdraw my prediction and the consequences if I am wrong a about Nugent scoring. He is injured again with a groin strain so probably won't be fit for either match.

I think people are less inclined to give Nugent the same leeway that Benjnai got purely because Benjani contributed massively in other areas from day one - in fact had Benjani been labeled strike support or gofer then he would have been an instant hit across the board. Nugent though, bless his camera phone antics is labelled a striker and doesn't supplement his lack of goals with end to end effort, he tries but he's not fit enough [or more likely not of the right build] to be bounding up and down the pitch. Same too Defoe, he's never going to contribute like Benjani but unlike Nugent I think he'll get the goals.
