Defoe is a Pompey player...
Pompey have dismissed any lingering thoughts that Jermain Defoe has still not signed a permanent contract.
We all thought that Defoe had been signed permanently in the first place, as he was unveiled as such... then we found it out was a loan with a promise to buy... still some doubts lingered in peoples minds but Pompey spokesman Gary Double has told The News that a £7.5m 4 and a half year contract has been signed: 'it was originally a loan deal which would become permanent. There was never any question that wasn't going to be the case.
'The deal is in no way connected to Benjani's move other than it providing the finance to do it.
'It's common knowledge we wouldn't have done the Defoe deal unless we sold Benjani.
'Jermain signed permanently last week and we're delighted about that'.
There was some talk that Mark Mudie was going to see the contract that Defoe had signed, as Peter Storrie had apparently phoned the quay to say that this could be arranged? I do not know if this did happen, as I have not listened to the football hours for a good few days.
We have had so many 'surprises' with Pompey over the years, but this one finally appears to have been put to bed...

slightly confussed by this story, it keeps being said that he has signed, then he has signed, then he has actully signed... will they/can they say it again?

great signing lads, pompey did say that it was a loan signing as they could not get the paper work done in time but a permanent signing was on the cards

Does signed also mean he has been paid for? Quote " The deal was in no way connected with Benjani's move other than it providing the finance for it". We got a first payment of between 4 and 5 million for Benji. According to reports at the time we didn't have ANY money in the kitty and couldn't afford Defoe unless we got 9 million for Benji. Something doesn't add up there. I hope everything is as it is said to be but I'm still wondering why PFC didn't say something last week.

I'm with Carps on this one, I thought he had signed 'officially' a week or so back, but obviously not... To be honest all I really care about is whether he'll be playng for Pompey next year and beyond .. whether that be a loan deal a pay per play or have him until we need him deal... It all appears done now so we can put it to bed
