Double boost for Pompey

We have been handed a potential double boost ahead of the FA cup game with Preston this weekend, as Sylvain Distin and Dave Nugent are both looking as if they will be fit and available to start.

Distin has missed the last couple of games with a hamstring problem, while Nugent had undergone a hernia operation after the win over Plymouth, but just a few weeks later - by the time the game arrives - he is looking as though he will be fit to start against his former side.

Harry Redknapp is already hinting that cup specialist Nugent could start this game, either way with Jermain Defoe cup tied it is highly likely that he could be needed to play some part.

The enigma that is John Utaka has also revealed that he is relishing the challenge that he is facing to get back in the side - so hopefully this will see him hungry to take a chance should it arise, and in all fairness he did seem up for it when he came on at the weekend.

******** play Utaka up front.
stillthewhizz
Can't see why we need to rush both back. PNE will make a fight of it but we should have enough to nick it. Utaka, Baros & Kanu, start with 2 of the 3 & bring the other one on later.
storagematt
we should rest nugent till he is fully fit.i would play kanu and baros up front.
stfc ballboy
utaka looked great when he finaly came on against derby. baros hasnt looked confident at all - so could probably do with a boost in the fa cup game. nugent - why not play him? utaka on the bench is ok, as he is still a great impact player. good to see distin back, and if he starts, it would let him re-settle into his position without as much threat,...
pompeycarpet
Distin & Nugent - Play both I say if for nothing else but to get their fitness levels up ... Id start with Baros & Nugent up front and have Utaka back on the right ... it is only Preston after all and although we can afford to be complacent .. it s only Preston afterall !! ... If we can't/don't beat them we don't deserve to progress
Chix
i agree with you Chix, start thenm both to help their fitness levels - if nuge isnt up to it 'arry wont risk him...
pompeyrug
We need to win this game, as we should want to get to the Cup Final, too often in the past we have been really laid back about Cup games. Blackburn this season was another example of how poor we can be in these types of competitions, i hope that Harry really gives it a go and picks a strong team.
Owenspompey
Nugent plays - no confidence in winning. Utaka up front, with Crunchie!
WalshWasGod
Nuge should play against old mates, strikers always seem to score against old clubs, its only Taylor who doesn't like it!
paultsmouth
Cant wait for Distin to come back, if fit enough, agree, play him for match fitness. Bet I end up with less votes than Kanu in the pol!! Great poll that one chix!....vote for me, vote fore me! lol
pompey4me
I agree with most comments made. Even if they don't start at least have them on the bench and give them a decent time on the pitch. Will Muntari be available?
frattonaussie
I don't mind who plays as long as we progress and don't get a big gun in the quarters as we usually do...
pompeygray
Too true Gray... a easy path to meet Scummers in the final at Wembley !!..
Chix
Spot on Gray; I'd start with Kanu and Nugent up front; Baros on the bench to come on with 20 mins left....when we're 2-0 ahead
UKTony
nugent and utaka up front! or we go back to 4-5-1 as we usually do away, with utaka wide right, diarra muntari diop in middle, kranjcar far left with nugent up top. its likely...
jbaker
i think that we should start with 2 up front - but as others have said as much as i would like to see nuge start just winning and getting a step closer to wembley is the main thing...
pompeyrug
I'd like to see Utaka and Baros up front - we have to use the squad else we get stuck in one formation like we did before Christmas...
ChrisW
Think. Beat Scum in the Final and Scum relegated. Great excuse for a street party!
auntwallop
How about Kanu and Baros up front, it would give Baros a chance to show us what he can do, then krunchie, muntari, diarra, utaka, behind, and lets spank them.
pompey batswing
No I don't want scum to reach the quarters let alone the final.
storagematt
auntwallop if what you say happens it will be more than a street party!! But I go with Matt and will be cheering Bresto Rovers in the carrot crunchers derby.
eastneydave
tbh i will only be bothered with what we do...
pompeyrug
utaka is not a winger play him upfront and you will see what he can do.
kaybee
We all have varying opinions on the players and team formation we should use. I await with interest as to HR's seections and plan as he rarely agree with us. I am fully expecting one week he will have James as a striker just to fool us all.
frattonaussie
jamo played as a striker for citeh on the final day of the season a couple of years back didnt he... pearce took off and outfield player to bring on their sub keeper and put him up front as they were desperately searching for a goal to get them into europe...
